Choose one topic for your essay
1. "DescartesХ decision to regard thoughts rather than external objects as the

empirical certainties was very important, and had a profound effect on all
subsequent philosophy" says Bertrand Russell. Write an essay in support of
RussellХs claim. The essay must be limited to a discussion of those
philosophers
from Descartes to Kant that are relevant for your argument.
2. According to the British historian of ideas, Basil Wiley, God was a
necessary
hypothesis in Seventeenth Century philosophy. What evidence is there for
WileyХs claim? Include in your discussion only those philosophers discussed in
the course. You must also include in your discussion the Eighteenth Century
philosopher, Immanuel Kant. (In your essay, you need to show how the idea of
God functions in the systems that these philosophers constructed. You must be
clear about why these philosophers thought it necessary to invoke the idea of
God.).
3. Spinoza, Kant, Bentham and J.S. Mill presented a moral philosophy in their
writings. In your essay, (1) explain what is the unique contribution of each to
moral philosophy, (2) discuss which among these four your would recommend as
an ideal moral guide for a life worth living. Your must present good reasons
why
the moral philosophy that you recommend is better than the others. |
